“The White House says the United States deplores and condemns the violence in Egypt as thousands of supporters and opponents of President Hosni Mubarak battled in Cairo's main square Wednesday. 

“In a statement, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says the U.S. is "deeply concerned" about [truths told] on the media and peaceful demonstrators. Gibbs say the U.S. is reiterating its previous calls for restraint by all parties. 

“President Obama spoke late Tuesday after Mubarak announced he would not run for office again. Obama called for an orderly transition that must ‘begin now.’ ”
