UPDATE: BLOG OF THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 13, 2010 - - RAISING VEGETABLES FOR SURVIVAL - REDUX
'Fork and The Missus have experimented for a spring, summer, and fall growing season.
Conclusion: leave farming to farmers.
Oh, sure, these two can boutique a meal now and then to include 'their' squash or peas or beans. But, can they grow for themselves a steady supply of veggies year-round? No freakin' way: the structural scales and functional skills sets would be fatally disproportionate to the farming tasks at hand.
Not enough square feet (no matter the micro-farm hype they've come across, in their opinions).
Not enough tools to get 'er done in sufficient and necessary quantity of output from planting to harvesting.
Not enough know-how without practice, practice, practice and study, study, and more study.
Q.E.D.: 'Fork and The Missus could ably design and manage building the farmer's barn; however, they could not fill it up. Filling up a barn is for farmers.
The relief: Dehydrate while veggie and fruit prices are ooching up, not shooting up.
Getting seriously into dehydrating could cost a couple grand and some labor of their own, and so would even a tiny tractor and accessories plus, plus, plus and the land to work.
More on dehydrating for survival, once 'Fork and The Missus get some jars and bags packed. In the meantime, here's a link to a multi-part series that turned their heads around to a better way for them:
