INTRODUCTION
'Fork's been considering serious, social applications for knives.
. . . . . . .
Whassup With This
His attention has been drawn particularly to the philosophy and practice of folders, including spring-assisted folders.
Conclusion: If you're into whittling as a social event, then mebbe a folder's right for you and mebbe not. If you're interested in other the utility of a folder in other social events, find something else in which to be interested. Say, a fixed blade.
Knives, For Your Own Good
'Fork's theory of knives to gitrdun or else grades folders low down. The philosophy of gitrdun knives is the more quickly presented the better. Can't be too quick. Can be too slow. And there's the rub of folders and 'Fork's theory of knives to gitrdun.
Gotta find it in a pocket - a clip helps some, especially if it's reversible, which most are not.
Gotta remove it from its resting place
Gotta open the it with two hands (leaving no hands for other stuff in times of trouble) or one hand if you can work the spring assist, assuming the blades not locked and in need of unlocking, which could be so whether you set it there or it gets there (locked) on its own
Gotta get it full open and locked, which can usually be, but not divinely ordained, say, when the blade's opening gets obstructed by your clothing
Then present arms.
And 'Fork's limited practice with spring-assisted folders to gitrdun does not succeed right quick when -
The blade loosens on its pin and begins to wobble and wobble more
The Made In China sorta knife with the U.S. Marine emblem has just about fallen to pieces . . . cleaning out behind 'Fork's fingernails
The two Gerber's - a little one and a bigger one are not so much, too, in his book . . . the little one cannot get opened one-handed by this old boy; the bigger one opens from time to time without being directed to open far as 'Fork can see, gaining a nasty scratch he a while back from ankle to knee when he was pulling on his pants one morning blade-open somehow; the bigger one's loosening up some, too, at the swivel pin . . . POS in 'Fork's opinion
Next Conclusion
Pack a fixed blade knife, say, a Mora Clipper or the smaller K-bar - pull and present. Only thing simpler might could be to wrap it up on the end of an ugly stick - no pulling, just presenting. ('Fork likes Kydex sheathes; 'Fork likes a smile release, unlike the the big K-bar's button/latch)
Consider a punch, neck knife, too. One that'll stay stable in your grip and not slop this way and that in potential conditions of serious use.
Never have seen yet a pile of self-defenses to two knives presented.
