PITCHFORK’S BLUEBERRY BUSH BUYING AND PLANTING GUIDELINES
#1 Work with a professional blueberry nursery if you’re serious about getting on the right side of cultivating blueberries no matter where you live on planet earth. Pitchfork talked with and bought from, Finch Blueberry Nursery at http://www.danfinch.com/berrys.htm and would go back again*. . . 12 plants 3-years old in 3 groups – early, mid, and late yielding - specifically suited to Pitchfork's geographical locale. [Follow-up: appear at this moment to have lost 1 each of early and late bloomers and all 4 IRA mid-season plants [subsequently, after weeks and weeks and weeks of treating one of the IRA sticks just like the foliated bushes, the stick just put out a leaf]. Some just quit. Some looked peaked for a while, perked up, then quit. Thought that the 1:10 mix of Ironite:5-5-5 might have been the culprit. Not sure: 2 hydrangeas keeled, but one looks swell; about a dozen roses of various persuasions are happy; 3 of the 12 blueberry plants gone were some poorly before fertilizing and 6 bushes are thriving. Go figure.]
*Update, 12/26/10: 'Fork's decided to refrain from further cultivation of blueberries - poor condition on arrival, too many losses during the first spring and summer seasons, slow growth to abundant bearing, nursery's inattention.
There are lots of different blueberry bushes,
generally divided several ways, including but not limited to –
Three or more types, among them rabbiteye, southern highbush, northern highbush according to one source; highbush, half-highbush, lowbush (some reckoning this as ‘wild’), and rabbiteye according to another, etc.
Within each type, distinctions can be made (usually with entrants) as to discrete overlapping categories of ripening –
Very early
Early
Mid-season
Late season
Within each type, further distinctions can be made as to –
Size of the individual blueberry
Blueberry firmness
Shelf life
Color
Flavor
Know how to manage all these variables to your benefit? No? So, work with a professional blueberry nursery.
