Introduction
There are plenty of out-there-in-the-real-world answers to 'How much ammo stash is enough ammo stash?' ['Stash' is the in-term for ammunition storage.]
Some ammo stashes are essentially indifferent in all aspects - kinda organic - unregulated, self-styled
Some ammo stashes are assorted among calibers and gauges according to someone's prescription if not their own
Some ammo stashes are downright thoughtful, rationalized by rates of use for target practice and rollover of inventory relative to a fixed base
Somme ammo stashes are accretive, aggregative . . . when you buy ammo for a practice or a hunt, buy extra or twice or whatever and take the excess home
Some ammo stashes are limited by discretionary funds
Some ammo stashes seem to rival a gun store's
Four strains of seeming sensibility with smatterings of nay-sayers arise from sorting out what others are up to with their ammo stashes.
Break 'em up into ammo storage boxes here and there, in deference to the day when someone might come looking for and finding your ammo, but not all of it
A corollary: For humping ammo from here to there and back or not, the ammunition storage boxes may facilitate and expedite mobility and utility thereat
There's the possibility that, under field-fighting conditions, others' stashes may become yours; therefore, larger stores may be unnecessary (a wishful forecast majorly contended)
In times of serious trouble, ammo could become a medium of exchange - especially, it is thought, .22 long rifle ammunition rounds; therefore, if you're gonna stock up on ammo, stock up higher on .22 long rifle ammunition - some say, way higher
Long guns - rifles and shotguns - get higher per arm allocations than handguns, often expressly in accord with Clint Smith's "The only purpose for a pistol is to fight your way back to the rifle you should have never laid down".
Pitchfork's take on modal average prescriptions for ammo stashes: 1000 rounds for each long gun - rifle or shotgun - except 10,000 rounds in .22 long rifle ammunition for each .22 rifle (additionally, subsonic .22s as suits you); 500 rounds for each handgun. Pitchfork's only major amendment to this inventory would go to upping hunting rounds for those shotguns ticketed for cultural hunting [read: for the dinner table]. . . probably #4 and #6 birdshot; but, really, again, as you like it.
