Whilst Pitchfork could not reckon majorly big diffs cumulatively in survival nutrition between sweet potatoes and white potatoes at least based on the kind of info immediately below (noting the method of cooking can alter these data some, especially if you skin 'em), he and The Missus experimented with survival sweets anyway for 3 reasons going in and a fourth now going on.
1. Potatoes are staples in folks' food consumption hereabouts, and it'd be a
survival hardship to do without
2. Reportedly, sweet potato consumption these days in the U.S. is about 2.3-4.4#/person; whereas, in 1920, such consumption was 29#/person: truly a homemade staple food (as in, baked sweet potatoes, steamed sweet potato, boiled sweet potato, sweet potato bread, sweet potato pie, sweet potato butter, fried sweet potato, candied sweet potatoes, sweet potato greens, sweet potato cookies, sweet potato muffins, sweet potato puff pastry, sweet potato turnovers, etc. . . . including sweet potato dog food, sweet potato dog treats and chews)
3. The Missus likes 'em
That was going-in.
. . . . . . .
Now in the early midst of the first growing season hereabouts, cometh a fourth
4. Sweet potatoes are among the toughest, most carefree vegetable that Pitchfork and The Missus have laid eyes on (long as you don't crack of their trailing stems)
- - Hardy to low water (keep 'em drained from standing water)
- - Hardy to high water (keep 'em drained from standing water)
- - Can look useless as wet straw on
planting and leaf out in a week or so
- - Can grow from store-bought plants or at home from the
potatoes themselves
- - The literature seems to say that it doesn't much matter
where you grow 'em, they'll grow
What's next?
Sweet potato plants - store-bought
Sweet potato seed potatoes and sweet potato slips
