INTRODUCTION

Planting survival sweet potatoes isn't any tougher than raising slips from survival seed potatoes or making-up sweet potato planting beds.

From Pitchfork's standpoint, indeed, it's easier.  How come?  Because Youtube does a better job on sweet potato planting guidance than Pitchfork could ever expect to achieve on his own.

UPDATE, NOVEMBER 2010

Sweets:

Before planting:

• Thoroughly soak planting medium
   

• Hole black plastic covering the bed, separating holes not less than 9-12LI, for planting slips
   

• Make bed not less than 18LI deep, mostly of play sand (not the sharp-edged builders’ sand) plus loose amendments including some mulch and phosphate-to-spec, mix will, still ending not less than 18LI deep
   

• Plant slips straight down all at the same time, not later than late May (for ‘Fork’s zone)
   

• Water well for a week or so; thereafter, water only when Nature’s drought begins to wilt the leaves
   

• In mid-late September, dig into the bed with care to determine extent of growth, which terminal phase is fast approaching
   

• Note well that sweet potatoes immediately unearthed are soft and fragile skinwise.  Set 'em out to dry in open air a while before washing up

In ‘Fork’s zone, Beauregard did well and Jewell did not.  Also, slips germinated from a store-bought organic sweet did well.  As to propagating your own slips, ‘Fork suggest going the damp, drained, lightly covered with soil route rather than the water glass or water tray route, to encourage more or less same-time slips sprouting.
