Pitchfork’s pleased overall with this survival kitchen utensil.  Pitchfork and The Missus got the larger, 11# maximum weight model.  There is a similar kitchen food scale by this maker for 5# maximum weight.

User Tips and Tricks

The stainless steel top plate really does come off its snug fit for washing.

Don’t you dare put anything on this digital food scale until it’s turned on and goes through its brief 3-2-1 countdown.  Then go to work with it.  Not before.  Got it?  Not before.

Survival Checklist

Five stars. Sturdy . . . Qualification, please:  Portable food scales aren’t cutting boards.  Digital food scales are not table tops.  Treat ‘em tough, disrespectfully and they’ll break.  Doesn’t matter whether they’re digital or mechanical.  It’s essentially one integral piece – the top plate is detachable from its snug fit and the control panel can be extended a bit from the food scale frame.

Note:  This food scale is electronic, digital.  Wanted mechanical and couldn’t find one good enough.  This scale wowed him in comparison to both mechanicals and other electronics - seemingly judged all over the place as the best food scale.  Needed a kitchen food scale in order to learn how to bake breads. 

It’s the only non-all-weather survival kitchen utensil in the lot.  He’ll keep it up for the time-being, noting that a) he’d still prefer mechanical; b) it’d take a goodly time to run its batteries [flat]; c) bread baking may develop in ways and to points hereabouts where a scale isn’t needed; and d) he’ll keep an eye out for a mechanical.

Five stars. Reliable . . . Every time, anytime . . . just attend to the second of Tips & Tricks above.

Five stars. Safe . . . Yes.  The top plate’s big enough at about 7 ¼” square to handle most any container of stuff.  Nothing moves perceptibly in use.  Even if something falls off the scale, that something has about 1 1/8” to fall.

Five stars. Convenient . . . takes up very little room; control panel sealed; cleans up swell; control panel can separate from the frame tethered on a lean, insulated cable about 4” in order to continue use with larger-bottomed containers atop, digital food scale readouts are clear, and it's a portable food scale - size, shape, weight say 'take me with you'.

Five stars. Inherent, intrinsic benefits to quality of life . . . can measure weights of anything to 11#.  Have already extended its use to experimenting with veggie fertilizer mixes, selected kitchen utensil weights for packing, etc.
